One File, One Icon, One App
![]()
Here's something that people new to Macs don't always notice- on Mac OS X, most (proper) applications consist of only one icon & hence only one file.
You can literally place the app icon anywhere you like - desktop, for example, and it will work there. Removing that app is as simple as moving it to the trash.
When downloading an app, such as a instant messenger, it will be downloaded as a disk image (.dmg file), after which if double clicked will open up as a mounted disk. Within the disk is the app icon. Simply move the app to the Applications folder - or if you fancy, wherever - and voilà! you have just installed the app. Drag it to the dock if you want it there for a quick launch.
After that you can eject the disk image and trash the .dmg file.

: just think of them as .zip files!
lol. I never thought of it this way!! I always open the programs from the disks!
